Sheldon Lavin, the CEO of the OSI Group, the global food processing company, is over 80 years old. And he has held many titles during his long and illustrious life. He’s an accountant, a banker, a husband, father and grandfather. Sheldon Lavin is also a loving, caring individual who has built a very successful company by treating his more than 20,000 employees like family and instituting forward-thinking, award-winning worker and environmental safety policies. Although he has degrees in accounting and finance, Sheldon Lavin is best known for the work he has done turning the OSI Group into a major force in the food services industry.
It was in the 1970s when Sheldon Lavin first heard about the meat company Otto & Sons that would later become the OSI Group. They were a company with a reputation for top quality meat products that needed money to expand. Sheldon Lavin was so impressed with them, not only did he get them the funds, he became a majority shareholder in the company. By 1980, Lavin had full control of the company and was making it a force to be reckoned with in the food production industry worldwide. He started a process that has led to the company having 70 food processing facilities around the globe and customers in the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe.
Sheldon Lavin has grown the OSI Group through building facilities and strategic acquisitions and partnerships. He built 10 processing facilities in China to tap into their large and growing market. Lavin also acquired Baho Foods and Flagship Europe to increase the company’s profile in Europe. He partnered with companies in Australia, Brazil and Taiwan. Sheldon Lavin has also acquired a plant for processing hot dogs, sausage and bacon in Oakland, California, poultry company Amick Farms on the East Coast and a facility in Chicago formally used by Tyson Foods to increase domestic production.
Above all else, Sheldon Lavin is a visionary. Someone able to see what’s possible long before it’s made manifest and able to create a viable plan and do the work necessary to make his vision a reality. In early 2016, the Vision World Academy honored Sheldon Lavin by giving him their Global Visionary Award. Sheldon Lavin was chosen for the continuous perseverance he had demonstrated in actualizing his vision of transforming the OSI Group into a major player in the international food processing and distribution industry.
